The nun, identified as Choesang aka Choetso, died of the burn injuries, according to Gyaltsen, an exile Tibetan from Tawu, who quoted sources in the region. However, another source here citing contacts in Tibet said the chances for Choesang to survive are minimal after being “critically injured” but didn’t say she is dead.
The condition of Choesang, in the aftermath of the self-immolation, cannot be independently verified and confirmed at the time of this report going online.
Choesang is a 38 year old nun of Tawu Jangchup Choeling Nunnery located near the Nyitso monastery where a 27 year old monk Tsewan Norbu killed himself on August 15 this year in a similar fire protest condemning China’s rule of Tibet and demanding the exile spiritual leader Dalai Lama to return from India, his home since fleeing the occupying Chinese force in 1959.
Choesang carried out her protest at the same place where Norbu had burnt himself to death. Many Tibetans have apparently witnessed the immolation by the nun as a prayer service was being held at a nearby temple at the time.
“Long live Dalai Lama,” “Free Tibet” and “Let Dalai Lama return to Tibet” are the slogans that Choesang raised while setting herself on fire.
Gyaltsen said Choesang’s dead body is in the possession of Nyitso Monastery where a lot of people have started thronging to pay their respect. The monks at the monastery refused to part with Choesang’s body despite Chinese police’s demand to do so.
Gyaltsen also said security have been beefed up following the incident and described the situation in the area as “tense.”
Choesang is the 11th reported case of Tibetans resorting to this extreme measure to highlight the perceived lack of religious freedom and human rights in Tibet in this year alone. Five protesters including a 20 year old nun have already died while the conditions of other surviving protesters – mostly monks, former monks and nuns – remain unknown.
